Cuba Demographics. Cuba is an island nation in the Caribbean, between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic Ocean, 90 miles south of Florida. Cubas population is 11,096,395 (July 1999 est.). Cubas capitol is Havana, and Spanish is the language spoken there. Cubas population is 51% mulatto, 37% white, 11% black and 1% Chinese. Economics. The economy in Cuba is dependant on the state, which controls virtually all foreign trade. Tourism is a major factor in Cubas economy. Cubas export commodities include sugar, nickel, tobacco, shellfish, citrus, medical products and coffee. Cubas import commodities include petroleum, food, machinery, and chemicals. History: The Bay of Pigs Invasion and the Cuban Missile Crisis. The CIA had planned an invasion of Cuba while Eisenhower was in office, and the plan was carried out while newly inaugurated President JFK was in office. On April 17, 1961, Cuban exiles, using U.S. equipment, landed at the Bay of Pigs on the coast of Cuba. By April 19th, Castros troops had overpowered and captured the majority of the invasion force. This unsuccessful invasion was crucial in the development of the Cuban Missile Crisis. In 1962 the Soviet Union worked secretly to build missile installations in Cuba. When President Kennedy found out, he placed a naval blockade on Cuba to stop more Soviet shipments. Russian Premier Nikita Khrushchev finally agreed to return the missiles to the Soviet Union in exchange for a commitment that the U.S. would never invade Cuba. This is the closest the world has ever come to nuclear war. Foreign Relations. A trade embargo against Cuba that was imposed by the U.S. in 1960 is still in place today. The U.S. does not import any Cuban products, nor does it allow any American medical supplies, capitol or people to enter Cuba. This embargo was meant to paralyze Cubas economy and remove Castro from power, but all it has done is deepen the suffering of the poverty stricken Cuban population. This suffering has consequently affected the U.S. in the rising number of illegal refugees who immigrate to the U.S. each year. There is much debate among the citizens of the United States as to whether the blockade should be broken or not, and the U.S. is the only country to uphold this trade embargo against Cuba. Strategy determines how an organization is going to position itself in the market in terms of its products. There are two types of strategy: differentiation and cost-leadership. Differentiation strategy is when an organization wants to have the newest and best product. Cost-leadership strategy is when the organization produces a product that is already on the market but is more efficiently and more cost effective. Either structure is used to help an organization to reach its objective. The second factor would be the organizations environment. It is where the organization operates and includes conditions that influence the organization such as economic, social-cultural, legal-political, technological and natural environment conditions. There are two types: stable and dynamic. In the stable environment this is what the customer desires. It is understood and should be considered long term. For the dynamic environment the customer’s desires will change constantly. The stable environment is considered to be mechanistic. It enhances the long term performances of the organizations. The last would be technology. Using technology allows the organization to task by using tools, equipment, techniques, and human know-how. The use of technology gives organizations a greater results and efficiency as well as lower cost for the organization. There are three categories: small-batch production, mass production and continuous-process production. The small-batch is used to make a variety of custom, made-to-order goods. These are made for a specific customer to meet their specifications. Mass production is used for a company that will need a large number of goods that are uniformed. This is usually done in an assembly line environment. Continuous-process is when goods are created by continuously feeding raw materials though an automated system. They are equipment intensive but are sometimes operated by a small labor force. Technology has come a long way. Some parts will only use the digital phone and not even think about analog. By using technology it increases productivity for employees, for companies and for countries. It is specific to an organizations product which represents a key competitive advantage to organizations and challenges international businesses to manage the transfer and diffusion. It can also be used for research and development as well as specialized management knowledge to be integrated and shared. One of the risks would be inappropriate use of technology by joint venture partners, franchisees, and employees. Organizations should enforce employee secrecy agreements. They also need to use patents, trademarks, trade names, copyrights and trade secrets to protect proprietary. They must study the possible cultural consequences of the transfer of technology to assess to see whether the local people are ready and willing to change their values, expectations, and behaviors on the job to apply new technological methods to production, research, marketing, and finance. Upon cursory reading, Pixar appeared to have made a name for itself primarily through the use of digital technology in animation, to which it owes its commercial success, while Disney remained dedicated to the traditional method which no longer found strong following in the market. Closer inspection shows that there was a fundamental difference in the way the organizations functioned that was separate from the technology each used. Organizations may be seen to operate as open systems which interact with their environments in a complex and dynamic way. According to Ingols, Cawsey & Deszca (2011), open systems are called so because they are not isolated from their environment, but freely exchange information, materials, and energy with them. They are comprised of interdependent parts connected by a complex set of interrelationships. They move towards equilibrium, and once in equilibrium, will not change unless some energy is introduced. Individuals within a system would have a different perspective of the system’s function and purpose than those outside of it. Looking at organizations as open systems enables managers to better identify areas of misalignment and risk. The Nadler-Tushman Congruence Model is comprised of inputs that shape the strategy. The strategy drives the transformative processes box which eventually leads to the outputs. Feedback loops flow back to earlier stages to complete the model. The transformative work process includes four categories, namely informal organization, formal organizational arrangements, individual, and task. (people), and task (work). The Congruence Model states that these four categories in the work transformation area should be congruent (i.e., should fit) with each other (Jones, Brazzel, & ITL, 2006, p. 196). Pixar is an example of an open system which takes full advantage of the dynamics within the organization itself, and between the organization and the environment. Within Pixar, the informal organization is as important as, if not more than, the formal structure. Pixar has developed a â€Å"culture of collective creativity† that â€Å"values people above ideas,† and tasks are boldly add ressed because of the empowerment of employees. Feedback is swift because lines of communication are open; everyone feels safe to offer ideas, and innovation is highly prized (Catmull, 2008). Strong long-term friendships are forged, and as a result, the organization feels competent to take risks. This makes the external influences welcome within the company, thus it takes advantage of inputs from the academic community, the technical and artistic fields, and of course the demand from the market. In contrast, Disney is a highly traditionalist organization which emphasized hierarchy and centralization. Eisner insisted on maintaining strict control even over creative processes and roundly criticized ideas not in line with his own, thereby discouraging people from taking initiatives for fear of reproach. Regard for people took a back seat to revenues and stock performance. In other words, corporate Disney did not promote openness among its employees, lacked congruity or â€Å"fit† among its component parts, and discouraged open feedback and communication. It was unreceptive to outside influences, preferring to stick to its â€Å"proven† traditions harking back to early Disney years. Much of the negativity about human cloning is based simply on the breathtaking novelty of the concept rather than on any real undesirable consequences. On balance, human cloning would have overwhelming advantages if regulated in a reasonable way. A comprehensive ban on human cloning by a misinformed public would be a sorry episode in human history. This essay will discuss both the advantages and the alleged negative consequences of human cloning. What is a Human Clone? A human clone is really just a time-delayed identical twin of another person. Science fiction novels and movies have given people the impression that human clones would be mindless zombies, Frankenstein monsters, or "doubles." This is all complete nonsense. Human clones would be human beings just like you and me, not zombies. They would be carried and delivered after nine months by a human mother and raised in a family just like everyone else. They would require 18 years to reach adulthood just like everyone else. Consequently, a clone-twin will be decades younger than the original person. There is no danger of people confusing a clone-twin with the original person. As with identical twins, the clone and DNA donor would have different fingerprints. A clone will not inherit any of the memories of the original person. Because of these differences, a clone is not a xerox copy or "double" of a person, just a much younger identical twin. In the field of Anthropological studies, sociocultural anthropology has two considered major components namely ethnography and ethnology. The Murder of College Student Katherine Foster A 47-year-old woman living in a homeless shelter in Jackson, Mississippi has been arrested for a murder that took place in Alabama 28 years ago. Jamie Kellam Letson is being held on $500,000 bond in Mobile for the February 1980 shooting death of her longtime friend Katherine Foster, a student at the University of South Alabama when she was killed. Letson, who was 19 at the time, and the 18-year-old Katherine Foster were friends who grew up together in Pascagoula, Mississippi. On Feb. 23, 1980, Foster was a freshman at South Alabama in Mobile. When Foster went missing, a group of 50 volunteer students searched two days for her near the university and she was found in a wooded area near the campus. No Signs of Assault When she was found, there were few signs of foul play, except for the two bullet holes in her head and the blood underneath her hair. Investigators said her makeup was on, her hair brushed and her clothes neat and clean. There were no bruises on her body or any indication of sexual assault. Five days after the murder, police found a .22 caliber pistol at a nearby pond, but the gun turned out not to be the murder weapon, which has never been found. Few Clues Over the Years Three years after Fosters death, police thought they had another suspect when a university security guard committed suicide. In his home, they found an extensive collection of material related to the Foster case, including the autopsy report, news articles, and poems that the guard wrote about Foster. They also found in his garage a secure room with a mattress in which someone could have been hidden. But investigators determined that Michael Maris, the dead guard, had an alibi for the time of Fosters disappearance and he was ruled out as a suspect. Letson, who has served time for theft and bank fraud, was previously questioned by police in connection with the case  because she was a longtime friend of Foster, but the case had been cold for more than 25 years until recently. Assistant District Attorney Jo Beth Murphree would not tell reporters what evidence led to the arrest of Letson after 28 years.

But that is well outside a proofreading remit! Everything in your writing should be your own work (and you should clearly quote and cite anything you have borrowed from elsewhere). Otherwise it would count as plagiarism. However, we can offer some advice on boosting your word count. First, though, we’ll take a quick look at one thing you should never do when your document is feeling a little skinny. How NOT to Increase the Word Count The first thing most people do when stretching to meet the word count is add padding words. This means inserting unnecessary modifiers and clauses to artificially boost the word count. However, this will make your work harder to read. For example, you might begin with a sentence like this: The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. But after the Padding Word Fairy has visited, it could end up looking more like this: The historic Declaration of Independence, which is a very significant document in American history, was eventually signed in the seminal year of 1776. However, none of additions here provide extra information or insight on the topic: e.g., saying that the Declaration of Independence is â€Å"very significant† is not helpful unless we also explain how it is significant. And since clarity and concision are key in academic writing, this version is worse than the original! But what can you do instead? We have a few suggestions below. Hitting the Word Count the Right Way Even if your main objective is increasing the word count, anything you add to a paper should enhance your argument. There are three main ways to do this: Explain your arguments in more depth Add examples or quotations to illustrate your point Compare and contrast two ideas In all of these cases, the idea is to use whatever you add to demonstrate your understanding of the subject matter. For instance, we could expand the example above to say: The Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776. According to Belz (2004), this action â€Å"asserted the natural right of revolution as a principle of American nationality† (p.68). Here, the quote gives a specific consequence of the signing. Quoting someone also shows that you’ve done extra research, especially if it isn’t from one of the texts on your reading list! This extra sentence only adds 19 words (including the citation). But if you can do this throughout your document, it will increase the word count while also making your work much stronger.
